Michigan

Last Monday Grace and I headed to Michigan. My dad was scheduled for surgery on Tuesday. He ended up not having it and instead was admitted into the hospital for some tests. He's doing well and I'm so thankful that I was able to be there with him. Grace got to spend the week with Grandma and Grandpa Applebee. She had a ball!

On our drive up to MI we stopped at a rest area. They had these wonderful seats in the stall so I was able to use the facilities too!

Mom and Mike met us half way so I wouldn't have to drive the whole 6 hours by myself with Grace. We met at a mall in Battle Creek. Grace loved the ride with "Cat."

The rest of these pictures show how Grace was ALL over the house. I know Grandma and Grandpa Applebee LOVED having her but I'm sure they both needed a rest once we left :)

Christmas Happenings

Over the past two weeks we have had lots of Christmas activities to fill our time. It's been so much fun watching Grace enjoy the Christmas season.

Two Sundays ago we went to the home of one of my friends who lives in an apartment right above Main Street in downtown Lafayette. The first Sunday of the December Lafayette has a huge Christmas parade and there is no place better to view the parade than from Brenda and Brian's apartment. Grace was mesmerized!

Brenda and Charlotte

The "World's Largest Drum" was Grace's favorite!

When the parade was through Brenda showed Grace the joy of laying under the Christmas tree to see the lights above!

Speaking of Christmas trees, that afternoon, we also took Grace to pick out a Christmas Tree. A local tree farm sets up in the parking lot of our Dog 'n' Suds. They have the best trees in town!

We got our tree all decorated Wednesday night. We don't have pictures of Grace in front of it yet but it was so much fun to turn the lights on the tree Thursday morning and see her reaction. She stood and stared at it for about 5 minutes. And surprisingly, she has not even tried to take any of the ornaments off yet. She just looks at it with a big smile on her face!

Thursday afternoon was Grace's Christmas program at school. We had no idea what the program was going to consist of. All we knew was that Grace didn't need to dress up because she was going to have a "costume." The costume ended up being an angel. They put all the one year olds in wagons with sheets over them and halos on their heads. They had each of the other classes sing a few songs and then a couple of times during the programs they wheeled the 1 year olds through. The first time Grace seemed to look right past us but the second time she noticed us and we got a big smile. Surprisingly, all of the 1 year olds held it together through the program. It was fun to see the other classes and to see how quickly kids develop. One kid announced, "Mom is in the back!" Another little girl (from the 2 year olds) screamed the entire time because she wanted to go to her mom. Needless to say, we were laughing the whole time!

Finally, this past Friday, our department hosted it's "Fancy FAC" (Friday Afternoon Club). It was nice to get together and socialize at the end of the semester. And it was especially nice to have it at a location where kids could come. Grace wore her Christmas outfit (and then had to change because of a diaper malfunction). Below is a picture with some of the department's other babies (there were 15 of them born in a 16 month period!).

The life of a one year old

Many of my friends with kids say it just gets better as they get older. Every time I hear that, I wonder how it could be possible. I always love the stage that we're in, but then the next stage comes and it's just as fun. I must say, life with a one year old is awesome. It is so wonderful watching Grace grow, learn things, and develop into her own little person.

Speaking of growing. Grace is doing a lot of it. We took her to the doctor's on November 16th because she had pink eye (ugh!). She ended up having an ear infection too. That day she weighed 22 lbs. 7 ozs. We went back 2 weeks later to make sure the ear infection was gone (it wasn't!) and to do her one year check up. At that point she was 23 lbs.--even. Half a pound in just 2 weeks! It's not a surprise because she definitely eats (more on that later!). As for the ears, she just finished her last dose of antibiotic and we go back this coming Monday. Keep your fingers crossed. If they're still infected, I think we'll be getting tubes! On top of this, Grace got four more teeth the two weeks after her birthday to bring the grand total to 12. She has 3 more working their way in. At this rate, she'll have a full set of baby teeth by her second birthday. You can see the chompers pretty well in these pictures:

The pictures above and the ones below show Grace and I on her new favorite toy--my exercise ball. She loves to push it around the house and try to climb on top of it and then roll off. She giggles the entire time. Another current favorite game is for Mark and I to sit on the floor between our breakfast bar and couch. Grace will leave us and walk around the corner into the living room waving and saying, "Bye bye!" We sit there for a few second and then say to one another, "Where did Grace go?" or "Do you know where Grace is?" She then comes back around the corner with her arms wide open, a huge smile on her face, and gives a big "Ahhhhh!" She comes, gives us a hug, and then starts again. After about 5-10 minutes of doing this she decides not to come back and we have to go find her. She usually wanders into her room and starts pulling all the books off of her shelf.

Grace also loves walking around the house with her dolls or stuffed animals. It's pretty funny since some of them are half her size. But her favorite thing to carry around is her cow bell (something I got when Mark ran a marathon a few years ago and we brought out for the Omaha marathon). She walks around jingling it and chatting--she talks all the time! So far the words we have been able to make out are: Mama, Dada, bye bye, puppy, Daisy (Day-zee), and hi.

As I mentioned before, Grace is quite the eater. She is eating pretty much everything we are and has pretty big portions. She likes just about everything we have put in front of her, including salmon and just about every type of fruit and vegetable. Her favorite food is cottage cheese. She usually eats 2 helpings of it after she has eaten all of her dinner.

Grace has also moved into the one year room at "school". The first week was a little rough with her crying whenever we dropped her off. I'm not sure if it was separation anxiety, the ears, or the teeth. Whatever it was, it has passed and she now barely even looks back at us when we leave. The classroom is great. There are 2 teachers and 7 kids. They have a schedule with play time, crafts, lesson times (stories, flash cards, songs, etc.), music/rhythm time, and wagon rides. They also have three hours set aside for a nap and Grace has been managing to sleep 2-2 1/2 hours of that. They sleep on cots and I really want to sneak in some day and see her sleeping on her cot! The long naps are a welcome change for us. In the infant room she wasn't napping well (too much going on) and was falling apart whenever we picked her up. The long afternoon nap is really making our evenings more pleasant.

As you can see, we are definitely in a different stage. And we definitely love it just as much as we've loved all the stages before!

One year photo shoot

On Tuesday we took Grace for her one year photo shoot. It was a disaster! Every time we set her down she screamed. We left feeling as if there was no way that our photographer could have got a good picture. Boy were we surprised when these shots showed up on her blog! Now we can't wait to go see the rest of the pictures this coming week.

Thanksgiving in Iowa

Thanksgiving in Iowa is a Williams' family tradition. We packed up the car the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and made the drive out. Mark's dad joined us for the drive since his mom was already out there helping prepare for the crowd. On our way we made a few stops so Grace could work off some energy.

At Culver's for lunch. The bib said "I'm as cute as a Butter Burger is delicious!"

Taking a ride at the Coralville Mall in Iowa City. This was a great stop with lots to do and see. Grace loved being able to walk through the mall. It was so cute--she was so proud of herself!

The whole crowd was there by Thanksgiving morning. Grace seemed a bit overwhelmed at times. She's recently started the "stranger danger" stage and will shy away from some people (with no rhyme or reason!) but overall she was great and loved being the center of attention.

Ready for the lunch/shopping trip to Carroll on Friday. After our little trip we did our gift exchange and all read poems we had written. Grace even had one:

Grace's poem
If I may be bold,
The one thing I have learned is
Iowa is cold!

Saturday was a LONG drive home. I missed a turn so instead of going back through Iowa City and stopping at the Coralville Mall again, we went to Debuque. We did the mall there (they are really great places to stop with a baby!). We got a nice lunch at Bishop's, Grace got to play on their playscape, and I got to do a little Christmas shopping!

Grace even made a friend while playing :)
